A large, sand-covered region of a desert, generally featuring extensive dune fields built up where wind-transported sand has accumulated over a broad area rather than been swept clean or left as bare rock and gravel. The Sahara's Grand Erg Oriental and Grand Erg Occidental are among the most extensive examples of this sand-sea landform.
