A long, steep slope or cliff separating two relatively level areas of land at different elevations, typically formed where a fault has offset the land surface or where differential erosion has stripped away softer rock to expose a resistant layer's edge. Escarpments commonly mark the abrupt boundary of a plateau against the lowland beside it.
