Limestone Pavement

Rock Formations and Monoliths

A flat, exposed expanse of limestone bedrock, its surface broken into a mosaic of flat blocks called clints separated by deep fissures called grikes, produced where the dissolution of the rock along natural joints has widened them into an open, grid-like pattern. Limestone pavements are a distinctive surface expression of karst landscapes in temperate regions, notably across parts of Ireland and northern England.

Conditions for limestone pavements are created when an advancing glacier scrapes away overburden and exposes horizontally bedded limestone, with subsequent glacial retreat leaving behind a flat, bare surface.
