A flat, exposed expanse of limestone bedrock, its surface broken into a mosaic of flat blocks called clints separated by deep fissures called grikes, produced where the dissolution of the rock along natural joints has widened them into an open, grid-like pattern. Limestone pavements are a distinctive surface expression of karst landscapes in temperate regions, notably across parts of Ireland and northern England.
