An opening in the Earth's surface that emits steam and volcanic gases, found in areas of active or recently active volcanism where groundwater is heated by nearby magma or residual volcanic heat before escaping upward through a fissure or vent. Fumaroles are common in geothermally active regions such as Yellowstone and Iceland, often surrounded by mineral deposits left by the escaping gases.
