The Ganges Basin is a major part of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna system, draining roughly 1,999,000 square kilometers across Tibet, Nepal, India and Bangladesh. It is bounded by the Himalaya to the north, the Indus basin and Aravalli ridge to the west, and the Vindhyas and Chota Nagpur Plateau to the south, before the Ganges merges with the Brahmaputra through a complex system of distributaries into the Bay of Bengal. Within India the catchment spans Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and West Bengal among other states, and it encompasses the whole of Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. More than 500 million people live within the basin, making it the most populated river basin in the world.
