A large, persistent mass of ice that forms where snowfall accumulates faster than it melts over many years, compacting into ice that flows slowly downhill or outward under its own weight. Glaciers are among the most powerful erosional and depositional agents in mountain and polar landscapes, carving valleys and depositing sediment along their length.
