A narrow valley with steep, rocky walls, generally smaller and more confined than a canyon, cut by a river or stream through resistant rock, often at a location where the channel is forced through a particularly hard or narrow band of bedrock. Gorges frequently mark a river's passage through a mountain range or a resistant ridge that the surrounding lowland lacks.
