A elongated block of the Earth's crust that has dropped down relative to the land on either side of it, bounded by parallel normal faults, forming a trough-like depression under regional tensional stress. A graben is the structural building block of most rift valleys, which are essentially very large grabens developed at the scale of a continental plate boundary.
