The Greenland ice sheet is the second-largest body of ice in the world, averaging 1,673 meters thick and reaching over 3,488 meters at its maximum. It stretches almost 2,900 kilometers north to south, with a maximum width of 1,100 kilometers, and covers 1,710,000 square kilometers, about 80 percent of Greenland's surface and roughly 12 percent of the area of the Antarctic ice sheet.
