A tall, thin spire of rock rising from the floor of an arid basin or badland, typically capped by a wider, harder layer of rock that protects the narrower, softer column beneath it from eroding as quickly as the surrounding land. Hoodoos form in clusters where alternating hard and soft rock layers erode unevenly, as seen extensively in Bryce Canyon.
