The Horn of Africa is a large peninsula in northeastern Africa that projects into the Arabian Sea, forming Africa's easternmost extension and lying across the Gulf of Aden from the Arabian Peninsula. It encompasses Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti, and its terrain ranges from the Ethiopian Highlands in its interior to arid coastal lowlands, giving much of the region a drought-prone climate. The peninsula's location along one of the world's busiest shipping routes, near the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, has long made it strategically significant.
