An isolated hill or small mountain of resistant rock standing abruptly above a much lower surrounding plain, left behind as the softer or more deeply weathered rock around it is stripped away over long periods of erosion in tropical and subtropical climates. Uluru is also the most widely cited example of the landform this term describes, its steep sides rising sharply from the flat desert around it.
