A small, rounded hill rising from otherwise level or gently rolling ground, generally low enough to climb without difficulty and lacking the scale of a true mountain. Knolls commonly mark a locally resistant outcrop of rock or a depositional mound such as a moraine or a dune left behind by an earlier process.
