A rounded, steep-sided mound built where thick, highly viscous lava is too stiff to flow far from the vent it erupts from, piling up close to its source instead of spreading into a thin flow. Lava domes can grow within an existing volcanic crater and are prone to sudden, dangerous collapse that generates fast-moving pyroclastic flows.
