A broad, flat-topped highland built by repeated, wide-spreading eruptions of fluid basaltic lava that flooded the landscape in successive horizontal layers rather than building a single central cone. The Columbia Plateau in the northwestern United States and the Deccan Plateau in India are among the largest lava plateaus on Earth.
