The Loire Valley is a valley in the middle stretch of the Loire River in central France, spanning 280 kilometers and covering an area of about 800 square kilometers across the Pays de la Loire and Centre-Val de Loire regions. Known as the Cradle of the French and the Garden of France for its vineyards, orchards and fields, the valley has been inhabited since the Middle Palaeolithic period, and UNESCO added its central stretch to the World Heritage List in 2000.
