The Malay Peninsula is a long peninsula in Southeast Asia extending south from the Indochinese Peninsula, separating the Strait of Malacca from the South China Sea. It contains Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand and the city-state of Singapore at its southern tip, and a forested mountainous spine runs along its length, flanked by coastal lowlands. The Strait of Malacca along its western coast is one of the busiest and most strategically important shipping lanes in the world.
