Mauna Kea is a dormant shield volcano on the island of Hawaii. Its peak is 13,803 feet (4,207 m) above sea level, making it the highest point in Hawaii and the island with the second highest high point, behind New Guinea. Measured from its base on the ocean floor, Mauna Kea rises over 10,000 metres, taller than Mount Everest measured from sea level.
