A sinuous, looping bend in a river's course, developed as faster flow erodes the outer bank of a curve while slower flow deposits sediment on the inner bank, gradually shifting the bend's position across a floodplain over time. Meanders are the characteristic channel pattern of rivers flowing across a low-gradient floodplain, in contrast to the straighter courses typical of steeper terrain.
