A cone or vent that erupts a mixture of mud, water and gas rather than molten lava, formed where pressurized fluid and fine sediment deep underground, sometimes heated by nearby magma but often driven by gas alone, force their way to the surface. Mud volcanoes can range from small, gently bubbling pools to large cones many metres tall, and occur both on land and on the seafloor.
