A low ridge of sediment built up naturally along a river's banks, formed as floodwater spilling over the channel edge slows abruptly and drops its coarsest sediment closest to the bank, before finer material is carried further out across the floodplain. Natural levees stand slightly higher than the surrounding floodplain and have long been favored sites for settlement close to a river.
