An isolated peak or ridge of rock that projects above the surrounding surface of a glacier or ice sheet, its summit standing high enough to remain exposed while the ice around it buries the lower terrain completely. Nunataks are common along the margins of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and serve as fixed reference points for measuring the ice surface around them.
