Ojos del Salado

Ojos del Salado is a dormant complex volcano on the Argentina-Chile border in the Andes, straddling Catamarca Province in Argentina and the Copiapo area of Chile's Atacama Region, and at 6,893 meters is the highest volcano in the world, the second-highest peak in the Andes and Chile's tallest mountain. Rather than a single cone, it is built from overlapping smaller volcanoes with more than twenty craters, and its upper slopes carry lava domes, lava flows and volcanic craters across an area of 70 to 160 square kilometers with only sparse ice cover. Despite its position near the arid Atacama Desert, its summit crater holds the world's highest lake, a permanent crater lake about 100 meters across at roughly 6,480 to 6,500 meters elevation. Its most recent eruption occurred around 750 CE, and it remains geologically active with ongoing fumarolic emissions.
