A flat, fertile lowland grassland covering much of central Argentina, Uruguay and southernmost Brazil, characterized by deep, nutrient-rich soils and few natural trees across its vast, gently rolling plain. The pampas is South America's regional counterpart to North America's prairie and Eurasia's steppe.
