A U-shaped sand dune with its open end facing upwind and its rounded, forward-pointing nose facing downwind, essentially the reverse orientation of a barchan dune, typically anchored and shaped by vegetation that stabilizes its trailing arms while the dune's center continues to migrate. Parabolic dunes are especially common in coastal and semi-arid settings where sparse vegetation partially controls the moving sand.
