A broad area of relatively flat, elevated land that stands distinctly above the surrounding terrain on at least one side, often bounded by a steep escarpment. Plateaus form through regional crustal uplift, the accumulation of nearly horizontal lava flows, or long erosion of a once more varied landscape down to a resistant caprock.
