A deep basin scoured into the rock immediately at the base of a waterfall, carved by the force and turbulence of the falling water and the debris it carries as it strikes the streambed below. Plunge pools deepen over time and are a key part of the mechanism by which a waterfall gradually undercuts its own base and migrates upstream.
