A curved deposit of sand and gravel built up on the inside bank of a river meander, where the slower-moving water on the inner curve of the bend cannot carry as much sediment as it does on the faster outer bank and so drops its load there instead. Point bars grow as a meander migrates, recording the bend's slow lateral movement across the floodplain in their layered structure.
