A large, flat-floored depression in a karst landscape, far more extensive than an ordinary doline, bounded by steep karst walls and often seasonally flooded where underground drainage cannot keep pace with the water reaching it. Poljes are the largest closed depressions found in mature karst terrain, some extending for many kilometres across.
