A dense forest landscape found in regions of consistently high rainfall, characterized by a tall, closed tree canopy, multiple distinct vegetation layers beneath it, and among the highest biodiversity of any landform type on Earth. Rainforests occur in tropical belts near the equator and, in a cooler variant, in a small number of coastal temperate zones with unusually heavy year-round precipitation.
