A small, narrow, steep-sided valley, typically smaller than a gorge or canyon, cut by the erosive action of a stream or seasonal runoff into softer rock or unconsolidated sediment. Ravines commonly form as headward-eroding tributaries to a larger valley, deepening and lengthening upslope with each storm that sends water through them.
