A ridge of rock, coral or other hard material lying at or near the ocean surface, built up over long periods by living organisms such as corals or by the accumulation of sediment and rock. Reefs shelter the coastline behind them from wave energy and support some of the most biodiverse ecosystems found anywhere in the ocean.
