A steep, near-vertical rock face along a coastline, carved where wave erosion undercuts the base of a coastal slope faster than mass wasting can remove the resulting overhang, causing periodic collapse and a slow landward retreat of the cliff line. Sea cliff height and retreat rate vary enormously with the local rock type and the coastline's exposure to wave energy.
