A depression in the ground surface, ranging from a shallow saucer to a deep, steep-walled pit, formed where the collapse or gradual subsidence of soluble bedrock beneath it creates an underlying void that the surface eventually falls into. Sinkholes are a defining surface feature of karst landscapes and can appear suddenly and destructively where they undermine roads or buildings.
