An exceptionally narrow canyon, often only a few feet wide at its base while towering many times that height, cut where flash floods repeatedly funnel through a joint or crack in soft, easily eroded rock such as sandstone. Slot canyons are especially prone to sudden, dangerous flash flooding because their narrow width channels storm runoff from a wide area into a very confined space.
