A small mountain lake occupying the bowl-shaped basin of a glacial cirque, formed after the glacier that carved the hollow has melted away and left the depression to fill with meltwater and precipitation. Tarns are common in formerly glaciated mountain ranges worldwide and are often among the most scenic small lakes in an alpine landscape.
