A broad, flat expanse of mud, sand or mixed sediment exposed at low tide and submerged again at high tide, built up where fine sediment settles undisturbed in a sheltered coastal setting with a substantial tidal range. Tidal flats support dense populations of burrowing invertebrates and are critical feeding grounds for migratory shorebirds.
