Tiger Leaping Gorge is a deep canyon on the upper Yangtze River, known locally as the Jinsha River, in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, where the river passes between the Haba Snow Mountain and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain ranges. It is among the deepest river canyons in the world, and its name comes from a local legend that a tiger once escaped a hunter by leaping across the river at its narrowest point. The gorge is a popular multi-day trekking route, and it has also been the subject of long-running, controversial hydroelectric dam proposals because of its remote, dramatic terrain.
