A residual outcrop of exposed, jointed bedrock standing above the surrounding land surface, typically formed where deep chemical weathering beneath the ground rots the rock unevenly along its joint pattern, and subsequent erosion strips away the surrounding softened material to expose the more resistant blocks as a stack. Tors are especially characteristic of granite uplands such as Dartmoor in England.
