A valley with a broad, rounded floor and steep, nearly vertical sides, carved where a glacier has occupied and widened a former river valley, planing away the interlocking spurs a river alone would have left behind. Its distinctive cross-sectional profile is one of the clearest signatures of past glaciation in a mountain landscape.
