A low-lying area of land bounded by higher ground on both sides, usually carved by the long-term action of a river or, at higher elevations, by a glacier, and generally sloping continuously from its head down toward an outlet. Valley shape and profile vary widely with the process that cut it, from the narrow V-shaped cross-section of active river erosion to the broad U-shaped trough left by a glacier.
