Wigry National Park, in the Podlaskie Voivodeship of northeastern Poland near Suwalki, was established on 1 January 1989 and covers about 151 square kilometers of the Masurian Lake District and the Augustow Primeval Forest. It contains 42 lakes, the largest being Lake Wigry after which it is named, and is a Ramsar wetland site supporting more than 1,700 recorded animal species, including a large Eurasian beaver population.
