Bosque de Fray Jorge National Park, in the Coquimbo Region of Chile about 100 kilometers south of La Serena, was established in 1941 and covers about 100 square kilometers. It protects the northernmost stands of Valdivian temperate rainforest, a relict ecosystem sustained mainly by coastal fog in a setting that receives only about 113 millimeters of rain a year on the edge of the Atacama Desert, and UNESCO designated the park a biosphere reserve in 1977.
