Addo Elephant National Park lies near Gqeberha in South Africa's Eastern Cape and was established in 1931 to save a local elephant population that had been reduced to about 16 animals by 1920. Now the third largest of South Africa's national parks, after Kruger and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, at about 1,640 square kilometers, it protects over 600 elephants alongside Cape buffalo, black rhinoceros, lions, and numerous antelope species. Its expanded marine and coastal sections hold Africa's so called Big Seven, elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, leopard, whale, and great white shark, and the park also contains the world's largest breeding colony of Cape gannets and rare endemic plants.
