Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon National Park spans the Kenya-Uganda border around the extinct shield volcano Mount Elgon, 140 kilometers northeast of Lake Victoria, with Kenya gazetting its 169 square kilometer share in 1968 and Uganda its larger 1,110 square kilometer share in 1992, for a combined 1,279 square kilometers. The mountain is a crucial water catchment feeding the Nzoia River toward Lake Victoria and the Turkwel River toward Lake Turkana, and its forests hold elephant, buffalo, black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys, leopard and hyena, along with more than 144 bird species. Kitum Cave, penetrating some 200 meters into the mountain, is known for elephants that visit to mine salt from its walls.
