Mountain Zebra National Park lies in South Africa's Eastern Cape province and was established in July 1937 to provide a reserve for the Cape mountain zebra, which was then threatened with extinction. It began with just five stallions and one mare and has since grown through land acquisition to about 284 square kilometers of core park, surrounded by a further roughly 8,961 hectares of protected land. The park now supports more than 700 mountain zebras along with a range of reintroduced herbivores and carnivores.
