Nahuelbuta National Park, atop the Cordillera de Nahuelbuta in the Araucania Region of Chile about 162 kilometers northeast of Temuco, was created in 1939 and covers about 68 square kilometers. Its Mapuche name means big tiger, and the park is a sanctuary for ancient araucaria (monkey puzzle) trees, some dating back 2,000 years, alongside coigue, nirre, roble and lenga forest that shelters mountain lions, pudu deer, Darwin fox and the Magellanic woodpecker.
