Hornopirén National Park, in Palena Province of the Los Lagos Region of Chile, was established in 1988 and covers about 482 square kilometers of rugged Andean terrain bordering the northern part of Pumalin Park. Its Valdivian temperate rainforest includes roughly 97 square kilometers of ancient alerce forest and about 30 square kilometers of glacier ice near the Hornopiren and Yate volcanoes, and it shelters some 25 mammal species, including cougars, kodkods and the Chilean huemul.
