Irazu Volcano National Park, established on August 9, 1955 in Cartago Province, Costa Rica, covers about 20 square kilometers in the Central Conservation Area and encompasses both the active Irazu Volcano and the Prusia Forest Reserve. An IUCN category II park roughly 24 kilometers from the city of Cartago and 38 kilometers from the capital San Jose, it draws many visitors to its crater lake, whose color shifts over time, even though the volcano remains active and last erupted significantly between 1963 and 1965 and again in 1977.
